Treatment for Dry Eye

IPL / OptiLight

A light-based treatment for chronic dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), often known by the brand name OptiLight, is an in-office treatment that uses gentle pulses of light around your eyelids to reduce inflammation and help your oil glands work better. It's designed for people with chronic dry eye that hasn't fully improved with drops or warm compresses alone. The treatment targets the root cause of evaporative dry eye by improving how your meibomian glands release the oils that keep your tears from evaporating too quickly.

How it works

IPL delivers controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to the skin around your eyes. This light energy has several helpful effects: it reduces inflammation in your eyelids, decreases abnormal blood vessels that contribute to redness and irritation, and kills bacteria that can clog your oil glands.

The warmth from the light also helps loosen any thickened oils blocking your meibomian glands. After the light treatment, your doctor may gently express (squeeze) these glands to clear any remaining blockages. Over a series of treatments, this helps restore healthier oil flow and more stable tears.

Is this right for me?

This may be considered if you have:

  • Chronic dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
  • Dry eye symptoms that haven't improved enough with artificial tears or warm compresses
  • Blepharitis or eyelid inflammation contributing to your symptoms
  • Rosacea or facial redness affecting the eye area
  • Visible small blood vessels on your eyelid margins

It may not be a good fit if you have:

  • Very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick type VI) — light-based treatments work best on lighter skin
  • Active skin infections or open wounds near the treatment area
  • Recent sun exposure or active tan in the treatment zone
  • Taking medications that increase light sensitivity
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of keloid scarring

Your eye doctor can examine your meibomian glands and skin type to determine if IPL is a good option for your specific situation.

What to expect

1

Before

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 4 weeks before treatment
  • Stop using retinoids or exfoliating products for 3-5 days before
  • Remove contact lenses on the day of treatment
  • Come with clean skin — no makeup, lotions, or sunscreen on the treatment area
2

During

The treatment typically takes 10-15 minutes. You'll wear protective eye shields while your doctor applies a cooling gel and uses the IPL device to deliver light pulses to the skin below your lower eyelids. Most patients describe feeling a warm, snapping sensation that's very tolerable. Afterward, your doctor may express your meibomian glands to clear any blockages.

3

After

  • You can usually return to normal activities immediately
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and wear sunscreen for 1-2 weeks
  • Some mild redness or warmth is normal and typically fades within hours
  • Most patients need 3-4 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart
  • Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months may help sustain benefits
IPL is generally considered safe when performed by a trained eye care professional. As with any procedure, there are risks including temporary redness, skin sensitivity, and rare pigmentation changes. Always follow your doctor's pre- and post-treatment instructions.
